Whale Shark Encounter in Oslob, Cebu
Swim with Gentle Giants at Tan-awan Beach
The first major highlight of the Oslob Whale Sharks & Moalboal Sardines Xplore Tour is the whale shark encounter at Tan-awan Beach, Oslob. Known locally as butanding, whale sharks are gentle filter feeders that can grow up to 12 meters long.
Guests are provided with:
- Life vests
- Snorkeling gear
- Mandatory safety briefing
You will enter the clear waters under the supervision of accredited local guides, ensuring a safe, respectful, and regulation-compliant interaction. Touching, feeding, or chasing whale sharks is strictly prohibited, in accordance with Philippine wildlife protection laws.
This experience is ideal for first-time snorkelers and families, as the sharks swim close to shore in calm waters.
Moalboal Sardines Run, on the other hand, is an underwater phenomenon where millions of sardines swim in a large and dense school, creating a mesmerizing display. The sardines form a dense ball that is a natural attraction for various predatory fish, making it a popular spot for snorkeling and diving. Guests can enjoy the sight of the sardines and other marine life, such as sea turtles, lionfish, and colorful corals.
TourXP Oslob Whale Sharks and Moalboal Sardines Run Xplore Day Tour starts early in the morning, with guests being picked up from their hotels/resorts in Dumaguete City/Dauin and driven with a scenic ferry ride to Santander, Cebu then proceed to the town of Oslob.
In Oslob, you will be taken to Tan-awan Beach, where you will see the majestic whale sharks up close. These gentle giants can grow up to 40 feet long and swim close to the shore, making it easy to view them from a boat or by snorkeling. You will be provided with a life vest and snorkel gear, and will have the opportunity to swim with the whale sharks in the clear blue waters.
After the whale shark encounter, the tour continues with a drive to Moalboal, a town located on the western coast of Cebu. Moalboal is famous for its diverse marine life, including the sardine run, which is one of the most spectacular natural phenomena in the world. The sardine run occurs when millions of sardines move in unison, forming a massive school of fish that can be seen from the surface of the water. The sight of these shimmering silver fish swimming together is truly mesmerizing and unforgettable.

We had the pleasure of experiencing the TourXP Oslob Whale Sharks and Moalboal Sardines Run day tour from Dumaguete City, and I must say it was an unforgettable experience!
The tour began early in the morning, and our friendly and knowledgeable guide Brian greeted us at our hotel in Dumaguete City. We hopped into a comfortable van and began our journey towards the town of Oslob via Sibulan Ro-ro vessel.
Upon arrival, we were provided with all necessary gear and given a quick briefing on how to interact with the whale sharks responsibly. Then, we took a boat out to the area where the whale sharks congregate. It was truly awe-inspiring to see these gentle giants up close – they were enormous and graceful, and we were able to swim alongside them for an unforgettable experience.
After spending some time with the whale sharks, we headed to the nearby town of Moalboal at around 10:40 am for another incredible aquatic experience – the sardine run. This was another amazing sight, as we swam through millions of sardines in their natural habitat. The colors and patterns of the fish were truly stunning, and we felt completely immersed in this beautiful underwater world. We had lunch at the resort then proceeded for a cool refreshing side trip to a nearby waterfalls then proceeded back to Dumaguete City.
Throughout the tour, our Tour guide Al was exceptional – he was friendly, knowledgeable, and ensured that we had a safe and enjoyable experience. The entire day was perfectly planned and executed, and I would highly recommend TourXP to anyone looking for an incredible aquatic adventure in the Negros Oriental area.
